Vision & mission

Digital media, small-scale consumer devices and pervasive communication
facilities are now omnipresent in our daily activities. The way we live,
work, play, communicate and interact with each other is in permanent
flux due to the influence of these emergent technologies.

A computational culture is becoming essential for our society, from the
world-class researchers to the online gaming addicts. The usage of SMS,
videoblogs, iPods and virtual reality environments is now a part of our
contemporary culture.

The Competence Center Computational Culture (C4) is a research and
development center within DFKI (the German Research Center for
Artificial Intelligence), founded to coordinate and conduct research on
the cultural and social changes resulting from the interplay with
cutting-edge technologies. Our research is aiming towards real-world
applications for supporting artists, museums, scientific communities as
well as the entertainment-industry and next generation mobile commerce.
The C4 becomes a focal point for previous and ongoing projects at DFKI
concerning these topics.

Our vision is for the C4 to become a major hub in the international
network of creatives and scientists working on transdisciplinary
approaches for gaining high-level knowledge about best-practices for
methods, tools and platforms. With the help of our network of
international partners we offer consulting services, streamlined
development and open-source tools to transform this vision into reality.
